Medicines in commissioning toolkit

Version 1 of this toolkit aims to integrate relevant medicines considerations with the commissioning of a new service or the redesign of an existing service. Version 2 of the tool is expected to be produced later this year.

This toolkit has been produced by a working group of E&SEE Specialist Pharmacy Services to help commissioners ‘get medicines right’. Medicines are the most common treatment intervention and almost all care pathways involve the use of medicines. The document provides a number of detailed checklists and is intended to be both accessible to commissioners and to signpost them to their PCT/PBC pharmacist for help to identify any action points.  The tool could also be useful to service providers to help them identify and address the necessary medicines issues in service specifications. The focus of the document is on the practical aspects of managing medicines safely rather than specific prescribing issues such as high cost drugs, although some of the content relates to prescribing and expenditure, e.g. the funding checklist.

Preliminary practice based commissioning toolkit

This document has been included in both Word and PDF format and is structured so as to allow users the option to either interrogate specific aspects of the PBC agenda or the entire toolkit. It is important to note that the toolkit is predominantly designed for staff in PCTs but will be of value to both Strategic Health Authorities (SHAs) and Practices.

The list below are the section headings within the toolkit.

  • Practice Based Commissioning in Context
  • Accountability
  • Building Capacity
  • PBC Processes
  • Finance and Monitoring
  • Annexes and further support
